"A Starry Summer Night"
Raises $28,000 for Sisters Schools
A sold out crowd dined, danced and generously bid on auction items, raising more than $28,000 in net proceeds for the Sisters Schools Foundation on Friday August 12, 2011 at "A Starry Summer Night" held at the Aspen Lakes Lodge .
The event was a benefit for the Sisters Schools Foundation and will raise critical funds for classroom and co-curricular programs at Sisters Elementary, Middle and High Schools during this time of major budget cuts. The Sisters School District has had to cut more than $1.3 million from the budget since last year.
The event featured dinner catered by Brand 33 Restaurant, and an array of delectable desserts contributed by local school supporters and expert bakers Nancy Dempsey, Pinky Pagano, Chris Davenport, Karen Stoneback and Heather Pagano.
The High Street Band delivered an upbeat, high energy concert of classics and hits, keeping the dance floor full all evening. They brought the full 10-piece band and featured special guest vocalists, including a performance by Aspen Lakes' own Connie Cyrus, who brought the house down with her version of "When I Fall in Love."
Lead singer and local Bend businessman Matt Summers, a longtime Outlaw fan, was instrumental in bringing the group back to Sisters for the event.
Opening the show was a rousing set by the Sisters High School Jazz Combo, featuring recently graduated drummer Tanner Smith, senior bassist Trevor Ford and guitarist Brett Pray, sophomore percussionist Emily Corrigan and a guest appearance by Outlaw alumni vocalist Sarah Douglass.
The Combo was led by outgoing SHS band director and widely acclaimed music teacher Jody Henderson, who was honored by the student performers with a special gift.
A spirited silent and live auction, with noted auctioneer Dennis Turmon at the helm, offered a chance to bid on items including a Duck football game package, San Diego Chargers football game package, Duck and Beaver logo Nike Golf Bags, a Harvest Dinner for 12 catered by T.R. McCrystal of Jen's Garden; a "Full Moon Cruise" private dinner and lodging at Elk Lake, and a Breedlove guitar signed by a number of top musical artists, including Ben Harper, Kenny Loggins, Rodney Crowell, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Kathy Mattea, Keb' Mo' and many more, generously donated by Philippe and Ruth Mallen of Mallen Music Ranch.
"Our Starry Nights committee members and volunteers worked long hours in the months leading up to the event and throughout the weekend, making sure that every detail was taken care of," said co-chair Jeri Fouts. "The turnout of student support was inspiring, as they distributed posters, set up the stage, helped assemble the dance floor, hauled tables and chairs, served as auction assistants, bussed tables and cleaned up the venue after the event. Their effort was a great example of the kind of school spirit that makes our community so proud of the Outlaws."
Providing major sponsorship for "A Starry Summer Nights" were Aspen Lakes Golf Course, The Roundhouse Foundation, Combined Communications, The Nugget Newspaper, Gearbox and X-Press Printing.
On behalf of the Sisters Schools Foundation, we offer our heartfelt thanks to our sponsors, volunteers, High Street and all of our guests for stepping up and making A Starry Summer Night such a shining success.
